4 arrested in connection with Richmond homicide

RICHMOND, CA

Officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the 500 block of 12th Street at about 11 p.m.

Arriving officers found two victims in a car that had crashed into a light pole. They had both been shot, police said. The driver was wounded in the upper torso and the passenger was shot in the lower left leg.

Both victims were taken to Kaiser Permanente's Richmond Medical Center, where Ayyad, the driver, died. The passenger, a juvenile, is expected to survive, Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said.

Investigators determined that the shooting happened near 22nd Street and Bissell Avenue, where a white van pulled up alongside the victims' car and opened fire, police said.

The victims were able to drive as far as the 500 block of 12th Street before they crashed.

French said the shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity.

Police have arrested four suspects in the shooting -- three juveniles and one adult. Their names have not yet been released
