A bicyclist riding on the shoulder of a Sonoma County road was injured when he was struck by an SUV Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The cyclist, Forestville resident Gregory Hamby, 18, was traveling east on the southern shoulder of River Road when he entered the roadway into the path of a 2005 Chevy Tahoe, which was also traveling east, the CHP said.

The Tahoe's driver, 32-year-old David Oldaker, of Santa Rosa, was unable to avoid a collision and struck Hamby on a section of River Road west of Mirabel Road in an unincorporated area of Sonoma County, the CHP said.

Hamby was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment of moderate to major injuries sustained in the crash.
