Canto was assigned to the canine unit in 2005, when he was 2 years old, police said.
Canto was Officer Ian Leong's canine partner for six years and was responsible for numerous felony apprehensions and drug detections, police said.
Leong and Canto completed a month-long canine protection course and a narcotic detection course during their six-year partnership.
Canto also underwent specialized training in tactical deployments with a SWAT unit, police said.
