San Joss has issued pink slips to more than 600 workers as part of an effort to close a $100 million budget deficit.
Mayor Chuck Reed says San Jose cannot avoid layoffs but he says fewer workers will be let go if unionized city workers agree to ten percent cuts in pay and benefits.
If the police cuts go through, city leaders warn some low priority crimes may not be investigated.
