Liu met with several key senators on Capitol Hill on Thursday. They'll decide on Thursday whether Liu will become the newest member of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
President Barack Obama nominated Liu more than a year ago, but a handful of senate Republicans have already blocked an up-or-down vote on his nomination. They are questioning his credentials, as well as his politics.
"He's never tried a case, he's very inexperienced, he's a very liberal, activist lawyer," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama.
However, supporters -- including conservative Kenneth Starr -- say Liu has a brilliant legal mind and is well qualified. If confirmed, Liu would become the only Asian-American serving on the Ninth Circuit, which serves a region with 40 percent of the country's Asian population.
