Two Bay Area girls are competing in this year's Scripps National Spelling Bee. The competition kicked off Monday morning outside Washington D.C. with 275 spellers.

Kate Anoufrieva, 14, is an eighth grader at Walnut Creek intermediate school. The other Bay Area contestant is 10-year old Varsha Senthil. She's a fifth grader at the Challenger School in San Jose.

They had some easy words on Monday, like "fourteen" and "drowsy" and some tougher ones like "acetarious" and "hukilau." No one was eliminated Monday's written test.

The finals will air on ESPN Thursday night.
