It was 100 years ago, on Aug. 19, 1911, that 19-year-old Hazel Laugenour became the first woman to swim across the Golden Gate.
Believe it or not, there is film of that event. Hazel's proud dad was behind the lens when his daughter swam by.
Hazel was a sophomore at Cal when she Australian-crawled across the gate in one hour and 28 minutes. That shaved two minutes off the previous record.
The Australian crawl is also known as the front crawl or freestyle.
