Mountain lions do not tend to confront humans, but authorities recommend that residents avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk and at night, when the animals are most active.
In the event of a mountain lion encounter, wildlife officials recommend facing the animal, making noise, trying to appear larger by waving arms, and throwing rocks or other objects.
More information on mountain lions is available through the state Department of Fish and Game at www.keepmewild.org.
