A bill sponsored by Assm. Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco, would ban alcohol sales at checkout scanners. The Legislature passed the bill and sent it to the governor late last week.
"The fact is the technology without a human sales clerk intervening and checking ID and maybe smelling a person's breath who is already inebriated, no machine is going to check all that," said Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego.
Opponents say the bill is really a ploy by unions to keep the self checkout scanners out of supermarkets.
