According to ABC affiliate KXTV, the officer was shot on Highway 99 near the exit for Elk Grove Boulevard.
Officers with the Elk Grove Police Department assisted the CHP at the scene and were able to fire several shots into the suspect's car.
The suspect was killed.
The CHP officer has not yet been identified and is recovering at a nearby hospital.
