Mark Schroder and Janette DeGrace left at noon Sunday for a drive through El Dorado County. They visited a bar near Georgetown, then decide to take a loop back towards Auburn through a town called Hell Hole. On the way there, they got stuck in the snow.
After one night, Mark Schroder's father, John Schroder, said his son finally decided to try to get some help.
"I understand he stayed there and then on the second day, he decided to hike out about seven or nine miles to get a high point so he could get a signal out from a cellphone," said John.
Schroder was finally able to flag down a CHP helicopter that went back and rescued his girlfriend. They are still recovering at the hospital.
