A Marin County Fire Department spokesperson says the boy fell backwards into the pit around 7 p.m. at Dillon Beach. He has burns on his lower back.
The Marin Independent Journal says the family members were with the toddler when the accident happened.
An ambulance was called in from Bodega Bay, 20 miles away.
