It appears as though Ryan left the house on his own and he is 18 years old, but police are involved and Ryan's family is extremely worried, not only because of the way he left, but because his leaving at all is so completely out of character.
With each phone call to their Martinez home, Rossanna and Efrain Menjivar hope it's the news they've been waiting for, that their 18-year-old son Ryan has been found safe.
"We're willing to do anything for him to feel safe, we just want him to feel safe," said Rossana Menjivar, Ryan'smother.
Ryan disappeared last Tuesday from the family's home on Village Oaks Drive. Rosanna went up to her son's room as always to wake him for school, but he was gone, with little more than jeans, a sweatshirt and slippers on his feet.
"He left the wallet right there on his desk. His debit card, credit card, ID, and cash are still there. So he left with no resources and that's what I worry about," said Rossana.
Ryan also left behind his beloved dog "Blanco". He did take his cellphone, but it's unclear if he still has it. Ryan is a good student, a senior at Alhambra High School, who is set to graduate in a few months. He also works part-time at a Walnut Creek movie complex.
"He's an amazing young man," said Melissa Sackett, Ryan's counselor at Alhambra High. "I was just talking to him right before he left, or disappeared, and we were talking about graduation. And I know he's excited about graduation. I know he's excited about going to college next year. None of this makes sense."
Ryan did tell his parents the night before he disappeared that he had been bullied recently at school.
"He told us that people said 'You are a loser!' 'You won't amount to much.' And something else like, 'Even if you go out and shoot yourself, nobody will miss you,'" said Rossana.
"We just want him back. If he's watching or a friend of Ryan's is watching, tell him nobody's upset. All we want is for him to come home, and then we'll talk about the issue if there's anything else going on," said Efrain Menjivar, Ryan's father.
Ryan has yet to get his driver's license. The car his parents bought for him recently is still sitting in the driveway with one of his missing posters in the back window. So for that reason, they believe Ryan walked away from the home the morning he disappeared.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Creekside Church at 444 Fig Tree Lane in Martinez.
