Two of the center lanes are closed leaving only two lanes open in each direction.
Mary Currie with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District says the issue is due to a paving problem.
The two most westerly lanes were paved Monday night as part of the the Seismic Retrofit project at the north approach. When cars began driving on them during the morning commute, the asphalt began to unravel leaving aggregate debris including pebbles on the roadway.
Currie say there will be intermittent traffic breaks at the north end of the bridge until around 1:30 p.m. while crews clear the roadway.
For the afternoon commute, the district is aiming to have four northbound lanes and two southbound lanes open. They will keep only two southbound lanes open until 11 p.m. when construction resumes.
