Officials say that searchers found the boy's body at 4:45 p.m., about two and a half hours after he went into the water near Hillcrest Avenue.
It was a very sad ending to the search that involved several agencies, dive teams, and a helicopter.
Officials say the 13-year-old boy fell into the water while playing two other boys -- his 10-year-old cousin and another boy who is eight.
The canal is protected by a chain link fence, but the boys managed to get through the fence and were playing when the oldest fell into the water. He apparently could not swim.
His younger cousin who could swim jumped in after him, but wasn't able to help. That boy was able to get out of the water safely and call for help.
Searchers found the boy's body at the bottom of the canal.
A sign next to the canal says very clearly no trespassing and no swimming.
This is the second drowning in this canal in the last month. The last one involved an adult who was under the influence.
