Body found in Santa Cruz, overdose suspected

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.

Police say someone called them around 6 a.m. to report the body. Officers searched and found the body of a 34-year-old man near Soquel and River Streets.

Investigators believe he may have overdosed on heroin. Officials say the levee area has been a magnet for illegal camping, drug use, prostitution and violence.

"And we've got a group of people who are disrespectful in their behavior and they're creating a problem, and they're creating a quality of life issue for businesses and residents who want to use the levee for its intended purposes," explained Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark.

Officials say there are efforts underway to clean up the area and return it to a natural resource.
