93-year-old man dies in East Oakland house fire

OAKLAND, Calif.

Firefighters responded to reports of the fire at 9:54 a.m. in the 1700 block of Church Street, according to the fire department.

They found flames coming from the left side of the one-story home and spreading into the attic, acting Battalion Chief Marlon Brandle said.

Firefighters controlled the fire by 10:19 a.m. but found the man, the sole occupant of the home, dead inside, Brandle said.

The fire caused heavy fire damage to six of the home's eight rooms and the attic, as well as smoke damage throughout, Brandle said.

Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the blaze but the preliminary investigation suggests it was an accidental electrical fire, Brandle said.
