UNINCORPORATED MARIN COUNTY, Calif. -- California Highway Patrol officers and Marin County sheriff's deputies are searching for a suspect who fled after a pursuit and crash this morning, a CHP spokesman said.

The incident began around 6:20 a.m. when a CHP officer on patrol tried to pull over a vehicle for a speeding violation, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The driver fled, prompting a brief pursuit that ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into a creekbed near Redwood Drive and Carson Road, Barclay said.

The male driver and female passenger fled on foot and the car soon became engulfed in flames, according to Barclay.

The female passenger was apprehended a short time later but the male suspect remains at large, Barclay said.

Sheriff's deputies are assisting in the search for the suspect and a CHP helicopter crew is also involved, sheriff's officials wrote on Twitter this morning.

No description of the male suspect was immediately available, Barclay said.
