EXCLUSIVE: UC President weighs in after new sexual misconduct allegation surfaces at UC Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- Another sexual misconduct scandal is brewing at the University of California Berkeley and this one involves a student and one of the universities most respected coaches.

UC Berkeley is responding to new sexual assault allegations from a former female crew team member. She says she was sexually assaulted and that coach Mike Teti responded with, "You're no angel."

Teti said the allegations are completely false and that any investigation will prove that.

In the meantime, ABC7 News asked students on campus what they felt about the most recent sexual assault allegation the response from several students was, which one?

A former female UC Berkeley crew member says she was sexually assaulted by other crew members on two occasions in 2013 and 2014.

She said Coach Mike Teti said he was aware of one of the assaults through his own sources, then said, "she was no angel."

ABC7 News asked UC President Janet Napolitano about the latest allegation.

"We're doing a lot of action at Berkeley to make sure that the issues surrounding sexual harassment are dealt with properly and effectively and that sanctions are commensurate with the substantiated claims," Napolitano said.

In an emailed statement, a UC Berkeley spokesperson says, "once the investigation into the merits of the allegations has concluded, the University will determine what, if any action will be taken based on its findings."

Recent sexual harassment allegations on campus have included the university's assistant basketball coach and dean of the Law School.

"It's been a topic of conversation because there's so many," said Medline McCormick, a UC Berkeley undergraduate student.

Some students feel UC Berkeley is under a spotlight.

"I feel like it's prevalent all over the nation," said Kevin Wu, a graduate student at UC Berkeley's school of optometry.

"Everybody is getting training everybody is getting education," Napolitano said.

Grad student Stephanie Chui says the Dean of the Optometry School spoke with students.

"Make sure we knew what to do if we felt we were a victim," Chui said.

"Accountability is important as is transparency," Napolitano added.

The former crew member tells ABC7 News she hopes other victims will feel safe to report sexual assaults on campus and that the university will handle them appropriately.
