Chief Chaplin says the officers were investigating several recent robberies in the area, and say they found a vehicle matching the suspect's car in the motel's parking lot.
"When Hayward police officers attempted to detain several subjects inside, the driver accelerated, striking police vehicles multiple times. Then an officer-involved shooting occurred. The driver of the vehicle was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries," said Chief Chaplin.
A Hayward police officer was hurt during the shooting but his injuries are non-life-threatening.
Both Hayward P.D. and the Alameda County district attorney are conducting investigations into this shooting.
