MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- The June showers seen this week was good news when it comes to the drought, but firefighters say it's bad news when it comes to our fire season.

Wildfire training is taking place in Mill Valley and every available firefighter is there. They need to be ready.

"Get ready for a busy fire season," Mill Valley Fire Department Chief Michael St. John said.

Severe drought combined with June rain could create a perfect recipe for fire danger. "Rain will diminish fire activity for a few days but when things warm up, fire season will be present," St. John said.

Dry brush is all around us in the Bay Area.

Firefighters in Castro Valley skipped their training and got the real thing this week when a grass fire started off I-580, but it was stopped fast.

"It's going to change a lot," homeowner Lindsey Orth said.

Orth is creating a defensible space around her house with a big makeover. "I'm doing what I should be doing - fire resistant areas, drought resistant plants," she said.

This fire training will last all month long because, ready or not, fire season is here.
