Celebration Train from SJ to SF carries legacy of MLK

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Dozens got on board the Celebration Train from San Jose to San Francisco to make the 54-mile birthday tribute to Dr. King and march to the Yerba Buena Arts Center.

"When I found out it was happening, I made sure to find out how to get tickets and here I am," explained Trina Johnson, a Berkeley resident.

What for years was known as the Freedom Train, is now called the Celebration Train. Caltrain decided to take on the historical event after securing some sponsors, like PG and E.

It's the second time Young John Montenegro rode the train to honor MLK.

"He was a man who wanted equal rights and who had an important dream to all people," said Montenegro.

Once in San Francisco, Montenegro and others marched as Dr. King did on so many occasions. The destination was Yerba Buena Arts Center where there were speeches and concerts.

"These are the things that we need to let our children know, that you can talk it out instead of fighting it out or shooting it out. Just talk it out," said Jacquelyn Hunter.

Some are disappointed that Dr. King's message of tolerance and equality has not been fulfilled.

"We'll be all down here, I have a dream, but the dream is a nightmare when we look at the poor and oppressed people," shared Rev. Franzo King with the African Orthodox Church.
