SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- A state senator is launching an effort to create single-payer health care in California. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) wants to set up an insurance system where the state negotiates prices with doctors, hospitals and drug companies.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Lara has not explained how California would pay for single payer health care.

Lara's bill still needs to pass several hurdles in Sacramento before becoming law.
