CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) -- A person of interest has been taken into custody after two children were killed in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 4 in Concord late Friday night.

Two boys, ages 5 and 10 years old were killed in the violent hit and run crash on Highway 4 in Concord overnight, according to the California Highway Patrol. A third child and their mother were hospitalized in the crash.

The CHP said the crash happened just before 11 p.m. Friday night in the westbound lanes of East Solano Way. The onramp was closed while the crash was investigated.

The initial investigation revealed that an Infiniti FX was driving westbound on Highway 4 towards the Arnold Industrial Way/Solano Way off-ramp when a Dodge Durango was merging onto the on-ramp onto Highway 4 from Arnold Industrial Way/Solano Way. The Infiniti failed to negotiate the curve in the off-ramp, and continued onto a vegetation field where it merged into the westbound on-ramp, according to the CHP. They said the collision happened when the front of the Infiniti hit the left side of the Dodge. The crash caused at least one of the vehicles to flip over, causing the two children to be ejected.

The childrens' 35-year-old mother sustained major injuries and was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, the CHP said.

After the crash, the CHP says the driver of the Infiniti fled the scene on foot, heading southbound across all lanes of Highway 4 towards the Solano Drive-in movie theater.

The fleeing driver was described as a black male adult with a lanky build, about 5'10" to 6'1" tall, with short black hair and wearing a gray or dirty white shirt, blue jeans and black shoes, the CHP said.

Witnesses said the suspect had injuries to the head and face.

The person of interest in the crash was identified as Lemuel Sirvonn Wilson Jr. According to his family, Wilson turned himself into authorities after the crash.

The CHP asks that members of the public who know Wilson or may have seen him at the collision scene call the CHP Golden Gate Communications Center at (707) 551-4100. Callers should say they have information for CHP Contra Costa and Officer Odom.
