Police say woman shot and killed in Walnut Creek, suspect on the loose
Walnut Creek police say that a man got out of his car, confronted and then shot a woman at Larkey Park Thursday. After shooting the woman the man got back into his car and drove away.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- Police are asking residents near Buena Vista Avenue between San Luis and Geary roads in Walnut Creek to shelter in place as they search for a homicide suspect Thursday evening.

After locating a suspect vehicle in the area, officers began actively searching for the suspect, with help from police K-9s and a California Highway Patrol Helicopter.

The person is suspected of fatally shooting a woman at about 1:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of First Avenue, near the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound and began providing "life saving measures," but she died at the scene, police said.

Several buildings near the crime scene have been placed on lockdown as a precaution.

The victim has not been identified and a description of the suspect was not immediately available.
