Drugs, alcohol suspected to be involved in I-80 pedestrian death in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- A pedestrian died Friday morning on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in Fairfield when a big-rig struck the person walking across the traffic lanes, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The first report of the pedestrian behaving strangely in the traffic lanes near his disabled vehicle on the Green Valley Road off-ramp came in at 6:25 a.m.

The collision occurred at 6:41 a.m. on eastbound I-80 east of Suisun Valley Road, according to CHP officials.

The man died at the collision site and CHP officials suspect the man may have taken either alcohol or drugs or both before he died.

The man was a 33-year-old Daly City resident, CHP officials said.
