7OYS helps couple who bought defective Murphy Bed
A local couple spent nearly $2,000 for a bed they could hide in a wall, but it came with a lot of problems so they called 7 On Your Side for help.

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KGO) -- If you live in a small house you may be on the lookout for space-saving furniture.

A couple in Half Moon Bay thought they could create a guest bedroom, but ended up with a lot of sleepless nights instead.

The couple spent nearly $2,000 for a bed they could hide in a wall, but it came with a lot of problems.

Allen Strohmeier's home office is the perfect size, except when he wants to use it as a guest bedroom. "It was too tight if we put a bed in there," he said.

However, his wife Kathy had a clever solution. "It seemed logical to have a Murphy Bed, I'd seen them before," she said.

They are beds that pull down from the wall like the one in a Charlie Chaplin movie.

Kathy decided it was time to get one. "We were going to be having family for the holidays," she said.

She went online and found MurphyBedsDirect.com. "They could deliver the bed in approximately six weeks, so that was the incentive to go ahead and get the order in," Allen said.

Allen could assemble the bed in plenty of time for Thanksgiving. However, that was a year ago. "Then they said well it probably is going to be a little bit later than six weeks," he said.

"The date kept getting pushed back," Kathy said.

"It was getting where it was 10 weeks, 12 weeks," Allen said.

"We saw Thanksgiving coming close, well forget that maybe we'll shoot for Christmas," Kathy said.

It didn't arrive until February and when it did, a lot of problems came with it. "Some of the pieces did not fit. important pieces," Allen said.

Boards had holes in the wrong places or no holes at all and the bed squeaked.

Allen tried contacting the company, but said no one responded. "I probably 60, 70, or 80 calls," Allen said.

The company finally sent replacement parts, but they didn't fit either and the color was wrong. "My wife suggested I call 7 On Your Side," Allen said.

After 7 On Your Side got in touch with owner Don Schultz, he said machinery failed when he relocated his factory last year and it halted production. It also led to his F rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Schultz released a statement saying: "Unfortunately the Strohmeiers were not the only customers who were left without product for several months and we take full responsibility. It certainly was not our intention. We are truly sorry that the Strohmeiers felt neglected during this difficult time. "

The company finally sent the right parts. Now Allen can turn his office into a comfy guest bedroom.

To help make up for the long delay, Murphy Beds Direct just refunded the couple $500 to cover the cost of shipping. Kathy and Allen are now planning to have family stay over for the holidays, just one year later than they'd planned.
