SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- As solemn as Friday was at City Hall, brides and grooms still came to the county clerks office to take their wedding vows. Three weddings every half hour take place at San Francisco City Hall.

The rotunda was off-limits today to couples, gracious couples who adapted their plans for photos as they acknowledged the mayor. How do you reconcile condolences with congratulations?

Jeniffer Cash and Jonathan Bercasio have been planning their wedding for months. Little did they know the ceremony would be held outdoors on this December Day.

Cash said, "I was stressed out but what can you do? Something not expected happened."

The picturesque rotunda had lines of mourners filing through to pay their respects to the mayor.

Weddings were diverted to the small ceremony room. But that wasn't going to work for this couple with lots of family coming in from the Philippines.

So all smiles, the wedding party walked across the street to the Christmas tree to exchange vows. Forty-two weddings were scheduled today. Five rescheduled. One was a no-show. And 36 couples got married. That's something the county clerk says Mayor Ed Lee would've loved.

Catherine Stefani said "it's been very smooth, very mellow. Everyone has been respectful. The photographers have been complying. I've been overwhelmed by how positive people have been about this.

One couple said "The location doesn't matter as long as we are together."
