Preparing for the storm

The first major storm of the winter is bearing down on the Bay Area and PG&E is trying to prevent blackouts, by trimming trees hanging over power lines.

The utility says it has extra crews and emergency personnel ready to respond to any outages.

San Francisco is trying to stay ahead of the predicted rain, by cleaning out catch basins across the city on Napoleon Street and off Bayshore Boulevard.

The city is also handing out free sandbags -- they're available at the Department of Public Works yard on Cesar Chavez Street.

Storm preparations in Oakland include handing out sandbags and plastic sheeting to residents.

You can pick them up at the Municipal Service Center on Edgewater Drive and at many fire stations.

During the last couple of months the city's Public Works Department has been removing debris from storm drains and bay inlets.
