Caltrans has opened up a mile long carpool lane from the Central San Rafael southbound onramp to the Highway 101/Interstate 580 interchange.
This will hopefully end a lot of the gridlock in the area. Northbound traffic should be status quo for now. The continuous car pool lanes in both directions are not expected to open until January. This $128 million project will create carpool lanes and regular lanes in both directions.
If the carpool lanes don't have too many cars in them, Caltrans may turn them into 'hotlanes' - which means solo drivers can pay to use them.
