Columbus Day holiday causes confusion

The DMV offices in Watsonville and Gilroy never opened today because of a dispute over whether Columbus day is a state holiday.

The SEIU encouraged its members to stay home from work and it set-up a tent in Sacramento urging those who did show up to file grievances demanding holiday pay.

A new contract negotiated between the state and the union eliminates Columbus Day as a paid day off.

That contract has not been ratified, so the SEIU says it's still a holiday for now.
