San Jose flipped the switch on a new solar system Wednesday. It's the first of many planned for the city.

This one sits on a rooftop and parking canopies at a city storage yard. It'll produce about 1.25 megawatts of electricity. That's enough to power about 1,200 homes.

"We're blessed in San Jose to have some of the world's greatest solar companies, leading the world in technology, and it's great to be able to use some of that technology right here on city facilities," said Mayor Chuck Reed.

A private investor put up the money and in exchange, the city will buy the energy at set rates.
