Capitol Corridor train strikes pedestrian

SAN LEANDRO, Calif.

A train heading toward Sacramento hit and killed a pedestrian this morning in San Leandro, a San Leandro police lieutenant said.

Capitol Corridor train No. 528, which runs between San Jose and Sacramento, struck a person around 10:15 a.m. west of Davis Street in San Leandro, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

San Leandro police Lt. Jeff Tudor said the pedestrian died as a result.

There were no injuries to the 35 passengers on board or to any crew members, Graham said. The train was canceled and passengers were transferred to another Capitol Corridor train, she said.

The pedestrian was not on the marked Davis Street crossing, Graham said.

The incident has since been cleared and trains are not delayed, a customer service representative said this afternoon.

In a separate incident at 10:30 a.m., San Joaquin train No. 701 from Bakersfield to Sacramento struck a pedestrian west of Merced.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the death was intentional.

There were two-hour delays along that line, but afternoon train departures should be on time, the customer service representative said.
