A school official determined the 5-year-old's homemade lunch of a sandwich, potato chips, banana, and apple juice was not nutritious enough because it did not meet the district's dietary guidelines. It was missing milk.
"We are not the lunch bag police, OK, but if we observe that a child who has brought their lunch is missing one of the key components of the healthy meal, we simply say, if it's milk, here's some milk. You may have it or not," said Bob Barnes with the Hoke County School District.
The grandmother says officials forced the little girl to take a cafeteria lunch of chicken nuggets instead.
School officials say the child was confused and was simply asked to take milk to compliment her lunch, not to replace her lunch entirely.
