Woman unhappy with mattress protector

The product is known as Protect-A-Bed. It's not only supposed to keep your mattress dry, but protect it from staining. Unfortunately, a local woman tells us the product didn't work for her.

Lara Eich struggled to show us the mattress she says was left with several stains. The mother of four bought the king size mattress a year ago along with a protective encasement.

"This was a brand new mattress, very expensive," said Eich.

She points to several stains left by her son after a number of accidents.

"This is the stain that went through for my son with the actual Protect-A-Bed cover on it," said Eich.

After the first incident, she sent the cover back to the company.

"They came back with a letter stating that I waited too long to send it in, past 15 days and they weren't going to do anything about it," said Eich.

Protect-A-Bed's warranty says the company at its sole discretion will either have the mattress professionally cleaned or replaced if it leaves a stain. The company instead sent her a replacement. But her son had a second bed wetting accident and once again stained the mattress.

"This time they came back with a letter saying the product was not defective," said Eich.

The company said it based that conclusion on thorough scientific testing. Once again, Protect-A-Bed sent her a new cover. And once again her son stained the mattress after a third accident. This time she called 7 On Your Side.

We contacted Protect-A-Bed. The company agreed to clean Eich's mattress, but that wasn't enough for her, so Protect-A-Bed came up with a new solution. The company told us: "Protect-A-Bed stands behind the quality and efficacy of our products. Our products are listed as class 1 medical devices with the FDA, carry the Good Housekeeping Seal and Protect-A-Bed is an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau."

"They decided that they wanted to replace my mattress and now I will be getting a brand new mattress," said Eich.

The company tells us it believes it went beyond what's promised in its warranty to meet Eich's concerns.
