Sunset Magazine's tomato tutorial

Tomato planting tips:

Choose a sturdy plant: Avoid tomato plants with mutliple seedlings in the container, otherwise they will end up competing and neither one will become as strong as it could be.

Avoid plants that are starting to flower right now: The plant is sending energy to the fruit instead of the root, and right now we want all of that energy directed to root development.

Pinch off the lower leaves of the plant: Plant stem deeper and new roots will form, giving you a healthier, stronger plant.

Use wire landscape fabric for your tomato cage. Secure with rebar stakes.

Place four redwood stakes in the ground in a 20-inch square. Wrap with polyester twine.
