Oakland police investigate three shootings

OAKLAND, CA Oakland police detectives are investigating the 47th murder of 2008. At 2:00 am Thursday morning, Oakland police got a call of shots fired near 56th and 16th avenues. When they arrived they found a young man dead from a gunshot wound. Police are interviewing one potential witness. Also someone was shot and injured during a robbery at 46th and International Boulevard. Just before that at 79th and MacArthur, a woman was grazed by a bullet while inside her own apartment. Earlier in the week, Oakland Police Chief Wayne Tucker went on the defensive while facing criticism for the city's escalating crime rate during a city council meeting. The department is working toward becoming more efficient with new geographic based police work and they're in the process of recruiting and training new officers. At the same time, the crime rate is rising. Thursday's murder is the 47th this year - that's set to exceed the murder rate in 2007 which was 126. The murder marks a second one this week. On Tuesday somebody was killed and found inside the trunk of a car.
