The child nearly drowned while swimming at the Cull Canyon Regional Recreation Area on Cull Canyon Road in the Castro Valley area, Deputy Norman McAdams said.
The recreation area is a "popular Castro Valley swimming spot," according to the East Bay Regional Park District Web site.
The boy died Tuesday at about 5:00 p.m. at the Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland from injuries related to the swimming accident, McAdams said.
