The study looked at more than 400 women. It found that women who used topical lidocaine gel one hour before their mammogram had a 20 percent reduction in discomfort during the exam compared to those who did not use the gel.
Researchers said women thinking about using the gel should first check with their own doctor.
The study is published in the July online edition of Radiology.
