A reward for information about the stabbing death of a pit bull puppy that disappeared at San Francisco's Ocean Beach last week has been increased to $6,000.
The San Rafael-based group In Defense of Animals announced today it has chipped in $1,000 to the fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the killing of 7-month-old Pogo, a brindle pit bull puppy who disappeared from the beach July 22.
In Defense of Animals President Elliot Katz cited studies that link those who commit violence against animals to future acts of violence against humans.
"Anybody who could be so brutal to an innocent puppy is a danger to society," said Katz. "People who harm animals are usually just warming up."
Pogo had been given to a foster parent by an animal shelter, but disappeared from its owner after running behind a sand dune at sunset that afternoon at Ocean Beach.
A week later, on Tuesday morning, Pogo's body was found stabbed to death and dumped in the Bayview District, according to San Francisco Animal Care and Control officials.
Pogo had a rear leg amputated by a veterinarian due to a genetic defect. He weighed about 40 pounds and had white around the nose. He was wearing a red collar.
