Gilroy police arrested a 16-year-old boy this morning who allegedly tried to steal a case of beer from a 7-Eleven store and then beat two store clerks with a metal pipe when they tried to stop him, police said.

The altercation was reported right around midnight inside the 7-Eleven at 162 W. 10th St. When two store employees approached the teen, he allegedly dropped the case of beer he was carrying, assaulted the clerks and fled.

One employee was taken to the hospital with a large laceration to the back of the head that required 17 staples, police said.

Officers were able to track down and arrest the teen suspect, and he was taken to juvenile hall, police said. His name is being withheld because of his age.
