A 17-year-old boy turned himself in to police Tuesday night for the murder of another 17-year-old in Redwood City on Saturday, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced today.

Solomone Zarate of Redwood City was killed during an alleged gang-related altercation on Columbia Avenue near El Camino Real, police said.

Officers responded to the fight just after midnight and found Zarate suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Stanford Hospital where he died two hours later.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing an argument between Zarate and the suspect, described as a 16- or 17-year-old with a thin build wearing a baggy sweatshirt and jeans, according to police.

The suspect surrendered himself to the sheriff's office around 9 p.m. Tuesday and was booked into the San Mateo County Youth Services Center for murder, police said.

Police are withholding his name because he is a juvenile.

Anyone with additional information about the homicide is asked to call Detective Derron Sisneros at (650) 363-4055 or Detective Hector Acosta at (650) 363-7823.
