San Jose police are in the midst of a contract impasse with the city.

The police union has called for a membership meeting for Thursday.

City officials say San Jose can't afford the benefits and salary the union is demanding. The city is struggling with its eighth consecutive year of budget deficits.

Officers say the city is trying to cut costs at the expense of public safety. It's likely an arbitrator will decide on the contract for the 1,400 member force.
