BART considering layoffs and fare increases

BART officials say the transit agency's worst budget deficit in several years is now forcing them to consider layoffs.

It is now projected the agency's budget deficit could go as high as $56 million next year.

Revenue from riders is also going down as unemployment in the Bay Area rises and fewer people are commuting to work.

So the BART board is considering layoffs, fare increases and cuts in service.

BART's union says layoffs would affect riders most because the first jobs to be cut would be car cleaners.
