A 24-year-old man turned himself in to authorities in San Jose tonight for allegedly abducting an 8-year-old girl this morning from her elementary school before dropping her off at a hot dog restaurant, police Officer Jermaine Thomas said.

Mark James Porter, of San Jose, turned himself in at the city's main jail at about 9:40 p.m., said Thomas.

Porter allegedly abducted Kayla Montez from Holly Oak Elementary in the 2900 block of Rossmore Way around 8:40 a.m. today. She was dropped off around 11:10 a.m. at a Wienerschnitzel restaurant on Camden Avenue.

Investigators believe Porter heard that an Amber Alert had been issued and dropped the girl off before fleeing, Thomas said.

Thomas said Porter was an acquaintance of Montez' family.
