A large swell had been monitored for the past week and reached Hawaii on Wednesday morning, prompting Mavericks Surf Contest director Jeff Clark to consider Friday and Saturday as potential contest days.
The contest window began Jan. 1 and lasts until March 31. Contestants will be notified 24 hours in advance of when the contest will happen.
The contest will take place about a half-mile from Pillar Point near Half Moon Bay.
