Police identified the suspect Saturday night as Shannon Bradley Moore. No one that spoke with ABC7 Saturday knew Moore, but many knew the victim.
Friends of 73-year-old Raymond Casso say he used his post office box as his business address for his rubber stamp company. They just cannot believe Saturday morning's trip cost him his life.
"The fact that somebody would kill him, stab him to death in a post office, is just shocking," said Casso's friend Chuck Graham.
Police booked 37-year-old Shannon Bradley Moore of Concord with murder, but have not said why they think he killed Casso. Casso's relatives think it was probably a random attack.
"He was absolutely no threat to anyone I could think of. Probably just there getting his mail… Just mind-boggling," said Graham.
The murder happened at 11:00 Saturday morning. Witnesses say the killer stabbed Casso inside the post office and then ran outside into the downtown square. About four or five men who saw him did not realize right away what had happened, but quickly figured it out and ended up tackling Moore and holding him for police.
Witness Victor Meraz told ABC7 that, "There was a postal worker that came out of the door behind the suspect screaming and gesturing as to what had occurred."
The murder has shocked the residents of Clayton. It is the first murder in the city in 13 years.
"I felt like I needed to do something to let the family know this community will pull together in support, of supporting them in whatever way possible," said Suzanne Renner of Clayton.
Raymond Casso leaves behind a wife, three adult kids and four grandkids.
"He was just a fun guy to be around, always smiling, always happy," said Graham.
