The City of San Jose announced a $600,000 redevelopment grant to the San Jose Giants this morning to fund upgrades to the municipal stadium that was built in 1942. The improvements include new outfield bleachers, adding 500 seats to the ¬facility, an expansion of the concession stands and upgrades to safety and to the clubhouse are also planned.SIGN-UP: Get breaking news sent to you

This all comes at the same time that the San Francisco Giants are announcing today they're acquiring a 25 percent stake in the San Jose team. Discussions of such a deal began prior to the 2008 season, according to San Jose Giants chairman Dick Beahrs.

There is speculation that the deal is an escalation of a turf war with the Oakland A's, and that is expected to come up in a news conference today in San Jose. The Giants have long maintained that they have exclusive territorial rights in Santa Clara County.
