In these tough economic times, some shoppers are finding a dollar can go a long ways at the neighborhood dollar store.

"Comparing to the prices in supermarkets, this is a bargain. You can't beat it," said shopper Parris Oseguera.

You can find everything from household supplies to dairy products.

"Paper plates were twice as expensive in a regular grocery store as they were in the dollar store. If you are willing to buy generic paper goods, you can find them at a quarter of the price," said Good Housekeeping Research Institute's Miriam Around.

But you need to be careful about what you buy. If the item looks opened or could have been tampered with, don't buy it.

"We bought this product and the seal was broken. These raisins are probably fine, except there is this raisins exposed before we've opened the seal," said Around.

You also need to be careful about cosmetics. Good Housekeeping warns if packaging doesn't look familiar, it may be a fake.

A survey by Good Housekeeping found savings of up to $4 on name brand cleaning products and savings up to $3 on name brand foods like Cheerios and Wheat Thins.
