Kevin Arias was arrested after the incident, which began at about 10:50 p.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Fremont Street, police said.

Two male victims in the parking lot were approached by a suspect, Arias, who they did not know. Arias allegedly grabbed one of the victims by the collar and was going to hit him, but the victim pushed him away and ran with the other victim to a nearby apartment to hide, police said.

Arias allegedly followed the victims to the apartment and opened the door. The woman and boy met Arias at the door, and he allegedly pulled out a knife and swung it at them, according to police.

The boy was struck in the back, but did not receive a laceration.

The woman received a cut to her right hand, police said.

The woman's screaming alerted neighbors, who ran to her assistance and held Arias. About 20 neighbors held Arias until police officers arrived to arrest him for assault with a deadly weapon.
